Monday Night

A few notes from the last few days. The '07 Honda Civic is really impressive; North Florida is lovely; never stop in Cecil, Ga. (ever); plasma screen TVs are amazing; the Smashing Pumpkins were fantastic ... but will the new line-up come close to their old albums? New EPs from my friends at the UK label Art Goes Pop which I'll check out soon.

Let's Talk Music, Finally

I have broken through and listened to a few of the many CD's that are laying about:

New:

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Really, it's everything everyone else is saying it is. Rarely do I like the second album of an artist whose first album I loved. But this album is fantastic. Really, if you haven't, buy it and enjoy what critical rock is.

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
I didn't want to like it, but it's fantastic. You can never go wrong with anything Josh at Ella Guru suggests. New, classic soul.

Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block
Good album - more hits than misses. "Young Folks" is hella catchy. If it's on sale, grab it.

The Cinematics - A Strange Education
Currently spinning on the MacBook. It draws on a lot of familiar sounds, especially those from the late-'90's like Muse and Gene. Strong vocals, catchy and dance-friendly melodies. A few tracks hint of the '02 dance-punk movement with nods to Moving Units.

Old:
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
I am not ashamed to admit that I have always liked Matthew Sweet. Maybe his best album is Girlfriend with the title track "Girlfriend" and the singles "I've Been Waiting" and "Evangeline". Released in 1991 it was the peak of the pre-grunge, indie-pop movement. While more commercially successful than other favs like The Ocean Blue, Sweet's Girlfriend is a wonderful used CD buy.


More to come. Music comes rushing back swiftly and sweetly.
