Somehow, I missed this yesterday, but dance icon Junior Senior have called it quits after ten years. In 2003 (the year that defined the decade) they had their biggest hit with, "Move Your Feet". Dance floors 'round the world are shedding tears.

They have posted a MySpace blog to say good bye. You can read it here

Thoughts on Tonight's Debate

The whole election has me at a loss for words. First, I have no political bias coming into this debate. Second, I prefer to observe the process than play take-a-side politics.

This debate should, and may, be the most important debate of the election process.

But why do I feel like we, as people, won't hear anything new?

And even if we do, will anyone actually listen to it once the spin machines do their follow-up work?

I hate spin. And I'm not talking about no spin like Fox News talks about. I mean the honest facts; the truths; the analysis.

But not the spin.

I think everyone knew the day was coming, but another of the voices of youth have moved on with Larry Munson's announced retirement as the voice of the Georgia Bulldogs. For the last 10 years I've made a point to listening because his departure was always top-of-mind.

Many others have touched on all the details ... but here's my small voice of gratitute for the many memories.

Coolest of the Cool

Ever since the last edition of The Pulse, I've been thinking about another topic that, even as I get older, is still one I love to debate.

Who are the coolest musical acts, ever?

There's a million ways to define "cool" and considering that it is relative to each and ever person; it's difficult to pin-point. So I decided to base this on how I define cool.

- A band or artist, that when you hear playing at a record store, bar, club, friend’s house, etc., you think to yourself, "wow, what didn’t I think about playing that?!";
- A band or artist whose story or career is causes them to just be cool for what they’ve been through;
- A band or artist that has a song, that makes your heart race or drop; causes instant euphoria or depression;
- A band or artist who makes you talk to your friends or post on your blog about how awesome they are – and then six months later you are still takling about how awesome they are; and finally
- A band or artist that, when being described, can only be done by using “cool” or a synonym.

Band and artist that fall into the following categories are immediately disqualified:

- The lead singer/artist committed suicide - or died as a result of self-negligence (I mean seriously ... cliche);
- Has started in a reality TV show;
- Is named Michael Jackson, because as amazing as his work was back in the day, the cat is just wrong.

With that being said, here is the beginning of a list of artists that are straight-up, effin’ cool (in no particular order):

T-Rex – Every time I hear a T-Rex song, I feel like less of a music aficionado for not owning ever T-Rex album.

Yaz – Seriously, Upstairs at Eric's, may be the best one-and-done album by a band ever; not to mention one of the best dance albums of the era.

Jesus and Mary Chain – Every time I hear “Head On” it makes me which I was a rock star.

Le Tigre – Cool like fashion and broke up before putting out derivative, glossy albums.

New Order – With Joy Division disqualified due to Ian Curtis’s suicide, New Order still crafted so many great songs, it’s just plan silly.

Garbage – Okay, this is one that I know no one expected. But in the mid-‘90’s who was a cooler-than-the-cool front-woman than Shirley Manson?

The Raveonettes – Danes that define what this story is about. They look, song and art the coolest group in the world today.

The Postal Service – I know this is a controversial choice. Not only are they a side-project, but their songs have been used for major TV ad campaigns, but album was both genre defining and changing. It will be a top-10 of the ‘00s disc on just about every blog next year.

The Smiths – Morrissey and Marr. Need I say more?

Johnny Cash/Willie Nelson/Kris Kristofferson/Waylon Jennings – Collectively, They Highwaymen, individually the greatest writers and performers of their generation in the country genre.

The Cardigans – Do you remember the video for “My Favorite Game”?

Lucero – If you don’t crave whiskey and a cigarette when listening to them, you don’t have a pulse.


So there’s a start. Agree. Disagree. When this becomes an article, it will include your feedback and recommendations.

Pierre de Reeder (of Rilo Kiley) Interview

My exclusive interview with Pierre de Reeder will be up later tonight. de Reeder, who released his debut solo album last month, is also the bassist for Rilo Kiley.

Who were the artists that influenced you the most as a younger musician? Who most influences you now?

PdR: Ah influences … such a broad thing. Because even music I heard when I was six still has a lasting influence.

My young, young years had a lot of Tom Jones, Sinatra, Humberdink, etc. floating around the household.

But I guess I really started being interested in being a “musician” when I was around 14 and right at that time I was just coming out of a lot of classic rock. Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc. And moving into a strange combination of Reggae and Goth rock!

I’ve moved through the worlds of The Pixies, David Bowie, The Cure, The Zombies, Willie Nelson, The Jayhawks, Modest Mouse, Elliott Smith, Dylan, Neil Young and on and on. All of which endure and have had their influence.

That’s the funny thing, to some degree, they always will.

What the hell exactly is DeadJournlist.com? I've been thinking about it off and on for a while now. For some reason, how the site is defined matters to me. It is somewhat trivial, but none-the-less, I feel the need to explain my thoughts.

DeadJournalist.com started as, and still is a Web site first and foremost. It does have a blog component, but it isn't a "blog".

Why the distinction?

For one, the site (excluding the blog) isn't built on Blogger or Wordpress (and if it was, I'd be able to have RSS feeds or use feedburner, etc and actually have a more interactive site). But more so, I wanted it to be more than just a throw-away blog. I wanted to content to have some kind of impact.

I wonder if I have accomplished that. Not that a blog can't have impact, but to me, the reference of a Web site carries more significant meaning than that of a blog. I wanted some sort of journalistic integrity to the site. It's how the site got it's name - dead journalist (originally, the working name was the dead journalist or the dead journalists) referring to the american journalists whose dedication to being a journalist was more important that their own star-power.

As the site has evolved, or devolved, I've tried to stay true to the want of journalistic integrity. Whether I've stayed the path is a subject open to interpretation.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. As long as the site is taken with the level of seriousness, I'll be content.

But damn it I still it rather be called a "site" than a "blog".

DeadJournalist.com started as, and still is a Web site first and foremost. It does have a blog component, but it isn't a "blog".

Nineteen years and counting from the release of one of the most influential albums in rock history. Genre changing, it became a bastion of escape before grunge took over the angst-filled hearts of teenagers everywhere.

I suggest digging through your CDs, tapes or MP3s and listen to this album. For those of us who spent sleepless nights listing to "Something I Can Never Have" or "Terrible Lie" for hours on end, it will be a reminder the depths of despair-induced bliss.

For those of you too young to have experienced the album when it was fresh and new; take a copy and give it a few hours of listen. While I hope a remastered version, that will raise the low-end will come out around the 20th anniversary of it's release, the original is still relevant for it's lyrical content alone.

While I hope a remastered version, that will raise the low-end will come out around the 20th anniversary of it's release, the original is still relevant for it's lyrical content alone.

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine will release his solo album, The Fabled City, September 30th, 2008 via Epic Records. A stream of the album is below:










Live at Shea, the live recording of the The Clash at Shea Stadium in New York, will be release on October 6, 2008. The release occurs the same year that Shea Stadium, home of the baseball club, the New York Mets, will cease operation and be dismantled.



The Clash opened The Who on their farewell tour of the US and played two nights at Shea Stadium on October 12 and 13, 1982. The band had recently released the Combat Rock with the singles “Rock The Casbah” and “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” receiving heavy air-play.

RIP Jerry Reed

Devastating news when I hit the home office with the death of Country legend Jerry Reed.

Reed, who was 71, is one of my all-time favorite artists. He was vastly underrated for both his song-writing ability and his unique mixture of country and funk in the late-'70's.

He was also out-spoken, through song, of the '70's gas crunch with songs like, "Lord, Mr. Ford" and "The Crude Oil Blues".

Reed, for many, is best known as the "Snowman" from the Smokey and the Bandit movie series. In the '90's appeared in the sports cult movie The Waterboy as the antagonist coach. He also pitched Lipton tea in the early '80's.

But it was music where Reed left his mark. Besides the soundtrack to Smokey and the Bandit, he also had cross-over hits with "Amos Moses" and "When You're Hot, You're Hot". He was also a Grammy winner for his collaboration with Chet Atkins.

I can't underscore how sad Reed passing is to me. Coming a month after the death of Skip Carey, the long-time voice of the Atlanta Braves, it's been a tough month for the remaining strands of youth.
