RIP Jim Carroll
Sad news today that Jim Carroll passed away. He's best known, by most, for the song "People Who Died" and as the writer of The Basketball Diaries.
Carroll was an significant figure in my life. His book of free-verse poetry, Fear of Dreaming, influenced me greatly as a writer.
Although those who read this site, or have seen my work in other publications, have never been exposed to my poetry (because I keep it extremely close the vest) his style and format proved to me that I didn't have to follow the "rules" of writing.
Jim Carroll, dead at 59, RIP.
Below is one of the poems that I read so much I still had it marked with part of a gas bill from 11 years ago. I've re-typed it as published. What a loss.
"Love Story"
by Jim Carroll
The penalty for desertion
is death by a firing squad.
I'm saving you this trouble
enclosed is s pistol.
loaded with only one bullet.
squeeze the trigger once
perhaps nothing will happen.
but squeeze a second time . . .
a third . . . You see
I know the games you love

RIP B Jay Womack (AKA Bobby Ubangi)
B Jay Womack, AKA Bobby Ubangi, a central figure in and around the Atlanta music scene succumbed to cancer yesterday, July 1, 2009. He was 34.
As a founding member of several Atlanta bands; mentor to the likes of The Black Lips and Deerhunter; doorman for the Drunken Unicorn venue and one of the featured figures of the We Fun music documentary, he was one of Atlanta's true characters.
Chad Radford wrote a wonderful piece about Womack for Creative Loafing Atlanta that was released in the Tuesday edition. If you have five minutes, take the time to read it.

RIP Harry Kalas; Mark Fidrych

A tough day in the baseball/sports world with the loss of broadcaster Harry Kalas and then this afternoon of Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.
Kalas, the voice of the Phillies, NFL Films and Puppy Bowl was 73 when he died after passing out at the stadium.
Fidrych, 54, died in a farming accident. The Bird had a sort, but memorable career as a pitcher as a Detroit Tiger. A free sprit, he was maybe best known for talking to the baseball while pitching ...Labels: harry kalas, mark fidrych, rip

Remembering Mighty K.C.

It is hard for me to believe that it has been 15 years since the news came that Kurt Cobain died. I was on spring break during my senior year of high school. I remember staring at the radio in shock as the stations reported his death. For the next few hours, I was in a state of shock. I remember walking outside that afternoon with the voices of 99X and Album 88 deejay's saying, "Again, unconfirmed reports out of Seattle say there has been a shooting at the house of Kurt Cobain." that turned into, "The AP is now confirming that Kurt Cobain has been found dead at his home."

RIP DeadJournalist.com
I'd like to thank everyone for their support and patronage of DeadJournalist.com. It is with some sadness that I am announcing that I will cease publication of the site (at least for the foreseeable future).
It's been a great three-year run, but in the end, I just don't have the time to dedicate to keep the site evolving in order to remain relevant.
For those of you who contributed to the site over the years - thank you.
