I'm several weeks behind on News and Notes, so I'll get some updates done this weekend. The big priority this weekend will be my interview with Dead Confederate.

I have the first Kings of Leon album. I liked it, a lot. I saw them a few years ago with a friend who was a big fan. He and I made it through the show, but it was full of the yuppie-preps that half-listened, half-talked the entire time.
And I thought they were overexposed three years ago ...
After seeing them on E! and seeing how they are the new "it" band with all the "celebs" and seeing them look like they were dressed by a stylist of the stars ... they, that shark has totally jumped.
I know the new stuff, although it is more rock-pop than southern-grime. I'm glad they've been successful; friends of DeadJournalist, Snowden open for them a year or so ago, but damn ... they this new wrongness too bad.

So here I am, less than two weeks from the release date, finally giving it an instant review. (The album will be released on October 21, 2008.)
Turner, an Australian singer-songwriter, has crafted a hauntingly beautiful album. The album features strong lyrical content from Turner which is matched with a combination of well, but not overly, produced accompaniment. Several songs, including "Come With Me" and "Love Meteorite" provide feature a lush musical backdrop that includes a a string arrangements, with "Carcassonne" adding a recorder for additional depth.
Clear Blue is a must listen for anyone who favors singer-songwriters with pop sensibility.

- The Dandy Warhols have an interesting new project they are working on. Rather than rewrite it, here's the press release:
"The Odditorium, the Dandy Warhols’ famed studio in their hometown of Portland, OR, is more than simply one band’s space. It’s also home to their friends, the touring and local bands looking for a place to play, to record. The band has always striven to build and promote a community for musicians, and in 2007, they took a very purposeful step in making this a definitive part of their ethos. The Dandys began inviting other bands to participate in a collective project, the artists coming in on their own time to record new ideas over tracks others had already laid down, together creating what becomes a nearly living musical entity.
Called Breathe Easy, the project calls on the talents of artists like the Raveonettes, the Black Angels, J Mascis, Saul Williams, Spoon's Britt Daniel, Midnight Movies, and of course the Dandy Warhols, to bring their separate musical perceptions and abilities to finished product. Genre becomes loosely articulated; what unites the pieces is the emotion, the spontaneity that comes from collaboration and inspiration. It’s music that conveys both the individual contribution and the integrity of the whole.
Beginning October 21, 2008, the first of 12 tracks will be sold digitally at specified Breathe Easy sites and embedded stores, and 100% of profits will go to the Three Rivers Land Conservancy.
The Three Rivers Land Conservancy is a non-profit organization that works to conserve and preserve land by the Clackamas, Tualatin, and lower Willamette Rivers against urbanization. The Dandy Warhols and the Three Rivers Land Conservancy believe that conserving land and protecting against errant urbanization creates stronger healthier communities now and for future generations."

An open letter to Coyote J, while listening to Neutral Milk Hotel
Coyote J is my deejay idol.
Here's a little bit of, "Oh, I didn't know that" trivia about me. My first actually job was as a radio disc jockey. I was 16. To this day, it was my dream job. If my time as a deejay had lasted longer than a few months, I would have wanted to grow up to be Coyote J.
Actually, I still do.
I spent the years of my late teens and early twenties listening to Coyote J's Sunday night program, "The Edge" in the late-'90's. He is who introduced me to dark wave and dozens of amazing acts that I would have otherwise never heard. Before the social networking, peer-to-peer, file-share, streaming internet radio, iTunes, or the ease of internet access ... there was only 120 Minutes and The Edge.
I lived for Sunday nights. My college roommate and I would talk all week about his program. Our weeks revolved around it.
I did resurrected my deejay career - but as a club dj - for a couple of years in the mid-'00's but ten years later, my lone connection to the music industry is this Web site. I love, love bringing people new music; or reminding them of music they forgot; or playing music they never knew to begin with.
Coyote J is getting close to 30 years of breaking new music as a deejay from LA (California) to LA (Lower Alabama). What a lucky bastard - said with every bit of respect he is due.
I would love to interview Coyote J, but I'm not sure I could actually craft an interview that would do his career and influence justice.
