Each month Highly Rec'd puts together a newsletter to subscribers featuring the mixtape tracks and other exclusive content. To subscribe to it (which means getting the links excluded here) e-mail: highlyrecd@gmail.com and make sure to check out the Web site: Highly Rec'd

HIGHLY REC'D - THE MONTHLY MIXTAPE
Because good music is a right, not a privilege.

August '09: "I'd Know Those Eyes From 100 Miles Away"

23. Guster - G Major (live)
24. Jason Anderson - July 4, 2004 (special thanks: I Am Fuel, You Are Friends)

Knew Feature: "You Gotta Be/Kidding Me!"

Dynamite Hack, one of the best one-album wonders ever (at least one album that anyone's ever heard). Kind of like a pissed-off Weezer, DH out of Alvin, TX, named after a Bill Murray line from Caddychack, got the most attention for their rock cover of Eazy-E's "Boyz-N-The-Hood". But they also made one of my personal favorite albums of all time, Superfast, perfect all the way through, and the cherry-on-top being the hidden track, a piano ballad cover of the rocking "Anyway" sung by the lead's sister, too f'n cool. Actually, "Pissed-off Weezer" is too easy of a comparison, I would say they are much closer to a "Frustrated Fountains of Wayne" or an "Inconvenienced Better Than Ezra". And there is finally word of a new album on the horizon, and I'm sure they're going to sound exactly the same after almost a decade ...

Dyno-mite!
Return of the living Dead Journalist! Deadjournalist.com is back! And not only are they nice enough to feature ME every month, but they, in all seriousness, have the the best music interviews anywhere, and believe it or not, it's actually interesting! It's like "Inside The Indie Rocker's Studio" (That was all me, sorry Chuck!) without the Will Ferrell impression or embarrassing ass-kissing.

HIGHLY REC'D - THE MONTHLY MIXTAPES

July '09: "I Wanna Drink Too Much!"

Covered & Smothered '09!

June '09: "Have You Ever Felt So Goddamn Strong?!"

May '09: "It's Still Okay To Like Me"

April '09: "Just One More Thing You Outgrew"

Don't Hog the Covers '09!

March '09: "Sometimes I Wish We'd Just Get Our Asses Fired!"

February '09: "Join a Local Gang and Get a Cool Nickname!"

January '09: "What Will We Do? What Will We Do?"

There is absolutely nothing official about Highly Rec'd, but we do hope you are able to find at least one new tune that helps you get through your month/week/year, which in turn gets you interested in these artists and you can then go support them in whatever way you choose. http://highlyrecd.blogspot.com - Get Rec'd!

David Letterman Hearts Silversun Pickups - And So Does My Mom? Video of the Day

It was late 2005. I randomly ordered a new EP by an LA band off Amazon. The next Friday night, I was DJing early - well before the room was packed - and played a song by said band. One of the other DJ's, Brian Parris (a staple of the Atlanta music scene), says something like, "Are you playing Silversun Pickups?" I nodded. "I was going to play them tonight, too. That new albums is great." Again, that wasn't the exact quote, but you get the idea.

That holiday season I made my mom, who was in her early 60's, a mix tape of some of the best new songs I had come across. "Kissing Families" was on there. When I asked her for her feedback on the mix, she sited Silversun Pickups and Of Montreal as two of her favorites. (Yes, my mom has pretty good musical taste.)

So now Silversun Pickups are the first band in 15 years to have #1 "Rock" Single despite being an indie label a few weeks back. They are the new mainstream rock. (I assume since it has been a decade since I listened to a mainstream rock station.)

Anyway, I'll admit, I had not heard "Panic Switch" until watching this video. I'd love to not like it because the cool kids probably think they are a sell-out or something. But damn, that was a good song and a good performance. David Letterman agrees.

'90's Flashback: Todd Snider

Todd Snider is what is right about singer/songwriters. He tours non-stop, he puts out new music every year or two and can tell a story through song as well as anyone in his generation. He has a new album, The Excitement Plan, that you should check out ...

But I want to flashback 15 years for a minute. Grunge was at the top of its Pop popularity and Todd Snider released his debut CD, Songs for the Daily Planet, that was anything but grunge, but summed up that time as well as any album as summed up any period of musical fleeting fancy.

Take 10 minutes and listen to "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" and "My Generation (Part 2)" and see if you don't agree. Or better yet, track down the album and listen to the whole thing.

Exclusive Interview: Passion Pit

I typically don't give back stories on interviews, but I first contacted Passion Pit about an interview in early January 2009. As happens from time-to-time, bands blow-up in the midst of the process, and sites like this become a back burner or forgotten altogether. No hard feelings - it is the way the business goes. But a funny thing happened when I reached out to the band in June to see about resurrecting the interview ... it came back to life.

So I am more than a little happy to bring the readers of DeadJournalist.com this interview with Passion Pit - one of the hottest (and best) bands of 2009.

Atlanta: Save Eyedrum

Editor's note: This is a repost from Chuck Jones, fellow Atlanta blogger, DJ and all around good guy.

Hello everyone,

I'm taking a moment to share some potentially sad news about one of Atlanta's longest running non-profit independent art venues, The Eyedrum Arts and Music Gallery. Faced with financial set-back and escalating rent with Atlanta in-town property giant, Braden Fellman, the eleven-year-old Atlanta staple faces its possible demise.

I first attended an Eyedrum installation sometime in late 1999/early 2000 and can remember the amazing performance by Pam Howe (formerly of pH Balance) and Bret Busch (Double B). They were such an amazing talent with fantastic voices... Back then, Eyedrum was located in a tiny downtown dilapidated space on Trinity Avenue next door to what became the nightclub Trinity (most recently The Royal). At that time, Atlanta had a fully autonomous, integrated, and ambitious indie arts community, and it accomplished a lot of fantastic things in a relatively short period of time [collectives/organizations, bands, and other artistic talents such as subMedia, POP Films, Flashbang!, Eyekiss Films, DangerCrew, Aerial (Aerial2012), pH Balance. Minamina Goodsong, etc., etc.]. As a result, it wasn't long before Eyedrum was able to secure its new space on MLK, Jr. Dr. (next to Mattress Factory Lofts), where it has remained ever since.

Even before Eyedrum moved to its current residence eight years ago, the space it now occupies was used for many different art installations and openings/parties (as there were many indie art parties at various nondescript locations at that time). Therefore, the venue holds a lot of tender memories for Atlanta's budding and burgeoning arts scene.

As a community, we can come together by donating to Eyedrum in an effort to keep such a visionary organization in business (see how below). I would even suggest doing community organizing and fundraisers. Also, a little heavy-handedness towards Braden Fellman wouldn't hurt, since I'm sure the property value of Eyedrum's space has grown exponentially with the on-going gentrification of Cabbagetown and Old Fourth Ward.

Eyedrum May Soon Call It Quits

Financial straits snare Atlanta's longest-running all-volunteer nonprofit arts space

ATLANTA - Facing a heavy rent burden and ever-increasing operating expenses, Eyedrum's board of directors held an emergency meeting Sunday, July 11, to consider the survival of the longtime art and music organization.

The options are few. They include a significant decrease in rent, bringing on other Atlanta-based arts organizations to sublet part of the 6,0000-square-foot space, a move to a smaller space, or an end to the award-winning venue altogether.

Having just celebrated 10 years in October 2008, the demise of Atlanta's longest-running alternative art and music space would be a huge loss to the Atlanta community. Eyedrum consistently has been a nurturing ground for creativity and progressive thinking in that time.

The Eyedrum music archive, the gallery's greatest asset next to the people involved, features more than 1,000 shows recorded live over the past 10 years. It is one of the few venues that features - built-out by members of the all-volunteer board - three visual art gallery spaces, and a performance space with a professional-quality sound system with multi-track recording capability.

Eyedrum secured a $30,000 Warhol Foundation curatorial grant in 2006, and is a 10-year Best of Atlanta winner in both music and art categories (Creative Loafing).

These accomplishments were achieved all while operating debt-free - yet another point of achievement considering the nontraditional nature of the organization, and limited grant and sponsorship funding.

The board plans to attempt a negotiation with its landlord, Braden Fellman, later this week, and will reconvene no later than July 26 to discuss any developments on rent reduction, and to consider proposals from other arts organizations. Arts organizations and investors who are interested in partnering with Eyedrum should contact Vice Chairman Allen Welty Green at agmedia@mindspring.com.

Any donations received through Eyedrum's website (http://www.facebook.com/l/;www.eyedrum.org) will be directed toward operating expenses. And while such donations are greatly appreciated, the urgency and severity of Eyedrum's financial burden cannot be overstated. Without a hefty reduction in overhead costs, a major move - physically or in terms of the organization's identity - is unavoidable.
________________________________________________________________________

Started in 1998, Eyedrum is a nonprofit organization developing an interdisciplinary approach to the arts by incorporating a wide range of contemporary art, music and new media in its gallery space. The gallery is operated entirely by volunteers, and supported through memberships and donations. It has been recognized internationally as well as locally by Atlanta's Office of Cultural Affairs and within the community at large for its advancement of innovation.

Highly Rec'd's July '09 Mix Tape

Friend of DJdc, Jon Wolf, puts together a nice mix each month, and after a few months of being on hiatus(me, not him), I'm back reposting it here. If you've like to get on his mailing list (which includes the all links you need ... if you get my drift) email Highly Rec'd here

From Highly Rec'd:

HIGHLY REC'D - THE MONTHLY MIXTAPE
Because good music is a right, not a privilege.

July '09: "I Wanna Drink Too Much!"
1. Eels - Lilac Breeze
2. Dinosaur Jr. - Over It
3. Spoon - Got Nuffin
4. The Joel Plaskett Emergency - Fashionable People
5. Eugene McGuinness - Fonz
6. Miniature Tigers - The Wolf
7. The Color Wheels - Green Means Go (special thanks: Tom @ Radio Exile)
8. Boycotts - Beat On The Dancefloor
9. Lissy Trullie - Boy Boy
10. Japandroids - Wet Hair
11. So Cow - Casablanca
12. Apollo Ghosts - Palm of My Hand
13. Apollo Ghosts - Day By Day
14. Apollo Ghosts - Little Yokohama
15. Frank Zappa - No Not Now (1982)
16. Wheels On Fire - I'm Turning Into You
17. The Sweet Serenades - Mona Lee
18. The Soirée - Perfect Crimes
19. The Honey Brothers - Demonstration (special thanks: Pasta Primavera)
20. The Honey Brothers - Moonlight
21. Regina Spektor - Folding Chair
22. Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Shampoo
23. Young Orchids - Tonight (Be With Me) (Highly Rec'd exclusive!)
24. Andrew Bird - See The Enemy
25. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream
26. The Maccabees - William Powers

New If You're New Feature: ATL Rocks!
I have attempted to show-off an up-and-coming Atlanta band every month this year, so far so good, and this month brings us Young Orchids, a collection of Atlanta-scene veterans with a talent for lo-fi living room sing-along anthems, which is not an actual genre, at least not yet. But the YO were nice enough to donate an exclusive mp3 off their new Take One EP. The first full length is currently in the works, produced by Kris Sampson (Coathangers/All The Saints/The N.E.C), so get on the bandwagon early.

New Feature: Two Minute Drill!

You may have noticed an inordinate amount of mixtape real estate dedicated to one band this month. A certain band from Vancouver (wow, Canadian, what were the chances?) who have apparently traveled abroad in Asia, a lot.

I first heard of Apollo Ghosts earlier this year with their Joey Ramone-esque track "Land of the Morning Calm", but I was amazed to find that they were not some punk throwback band, but one of the most versatile bands I have come across in a long time. Most of their songs clock in at under two minutes, but in that two minutes they cover more ground than any other band I have heard this year: the ever-popular male/female vocals, upbeat 60's pop, quiet B&S style acoustic, trendy use of the ukulele, Kazoo accompaniment, and just good ol' catchy-as-shit garage rock.

So HR'd has offered you four tracks total, and if you like even one of those, do yourself the favor of ordering the rest of the albums (one full LP and a brand new EP) direct from Catbird Records for the low-low (lower than the iTunes Store) price of $5 for the full-length Hastings Sunrise and $3 for the Forgotten Triangle EP! Craziness!

Another New Feature: Best Deal in Town!
If Apollo Ghosts' direct-from-the-label deal wasn't good enough, another favorite from earlier this year, Fanfarlo, is offering their entire album "Reservoir", plus 4 bonus tracks, for ONE DOLLAR! For reals, $1, for one of the most solid albums you will find this year, the offer is only good until July 4th, so please take advantage, you will not be disappointed, and I would not be going to this much effort, or this many exclamation points, if it sucked!! Swear!!!

Highly Rec'd Fanfarlo preview

Permanent New Feature: Ketch Harbour Wolves
So if these two deals are still too rich for your blood, do yourself the favor and download one of the best albums you're going to find in this or any year, Ketch Harbour Wolves' "Dead Calm Horizon", for the mere price of an email address! Partake!

Highly Rec'd Ketch Harbour Wolves preview

News Feature: R.I.P. MJ
And just in case this once monthly mp3 newsletter is your only source for news: Michael Jackson has passed away. I'm sorry I had to be the one to break this to you.

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Really Really New Feature: It's the 25th Anniversary of Purple Rain!
I'm not actually sure how you celebrate this (it was by request), now go purify yourselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. (Although, aside from already being a kickass track, the the second verse on Edwarde Sharpe's "40 Day Dream" has an outstanding Prince homage in the lyrics and delivery).

Regular Feature: Cover Art
As always: Thank you, VS!
