Bernard Sumner (New Order, Joy Division, Electronic) New Project: Bad Lieutenant

You never know what is lurking in your in box ... and so this was an interesting press release. The news first broke about two months ago, but this new group includes members of Blur and New Order.

The entire press release:

Bad Lieutenant, the project formed in 2007 by New Order's Bernard Sumner (guitar, vocals) and Phil Cunningham (guitar), along with Jake Evans (guitar, vocals), will see the long-awaited North American release of their debut album, Never Cry Another Tear, on October 6 on their own Triple Echo Records imprint. Initially and for a one-week period, the album will be available as a digital download exclusively through Amazon.com; subsequently, for one month beginning October 13, the full, physical CD can be purchased only at Amazon.com.

On November 10, Never Cry Another Tear will be distributed to all other retail outlets via a partnership with Original Signal Recordings. In addition, "Sink or Swim," the first single from Never Cry Another Tear, is now available as a free download for a limited amount of time on Bad Lieutenant's website http://www.badlieutenant.net. "Sink or Swim," along with the new track "Dynamo," will be released as a single on September 28 via digital retailers.

Working with his management and booking agency, Sumner opted to release Never Cry Another Tear through an innovative do-it-yourself system for the digital world. For brick-and-mortar outlets, a more traditional retail and marketing approach will be implemented. Sumner's team has already put into place online social networking, marketing, retail and publicity platforms to build a solid global fan base, digitally connecting Bad Lieutenant directly to its fan base.

Never Cry Another Tear was produced by Sumner and Bad Lieutenant, and features musicians who helped make the legendary New Order a Platinum-selling band and one of the most influential forces over the past three decades in the alt/rock/dance genres. The essence of the new album is crisp, streamlined 21st century guitar music, underscored by keyboards and occasional melodica, and the distinct vocals and guitar work of Evans.

"This album is very important to me," says Sumner. "We've worked hard on it and I'm proud of it. It's also important because it gives people the chance to hear a gifted new singer and guitar player who I think is really talented."

Together, the band has spent over a year writing, recording and mixing the album in the U.K. which also features bassist Alex James (Blur) and drummer Stephen Morris (New Order and Joy Division) on several of the tracks. Bad Lieutenant, which plans to tour to support the new album, will include Morris on drums and Tom Chapman on bass. Three U.K. shows have just been announced - October 20/Brighton, October 21/London, October 22/Manchester, with North American dates on the horizon.

"There is some continuity to the music I've made in the past," adds Sumner. "But this is very different - because different people are playing on it. This is just how I now want to make music - it feels right to me and I hope at least a few other people feel the same."

New Order, born from the ashes of the near-mythic English band Joy Division, was one of the most innovative and critically-acclaimed bands of the 1980s, embracing the electronic textures and dance rhythms of the underground club culture while maintaining a mysterious and distant image. The group's pioneering fusion of modern aesthetics and dance music successfully bridged the gap between the two worlds, creating a distinctively thoughtful and oblique brand of pop. Between 1981 and 2005, New Order released eight studio albums, sold millions of albums worldwide and amassed Gold and Platinum awards. In addition, the band's single "Blue Monday" bears the distinction of being the biggest selling 12-inch of all time, having sold in excess of 3-million copies.

Former Miracle Legion and Polaris frontman Mark Mulachy tragically lost his wife late last year, and is now raising their three-year-old twin daughters alone. In response, a who's who (Thom Yorke, The National, Michael Stipe, Dinosaur Jr., Frank Black, Fountains Of Wayne, Ben Kweller, Josh Rouse, Juliana Hatfield, Elvis Perkins, and A.C. Newman for starters) of awesome indie rockers came out to support them with a benefit album covering 21 of his tracks, with 20 more to be released digitally on 9/29. The theme song to The Adventures of Pete & Pete, "Hey Sandy", has always been a nostalgic summertime staple for myself, and I hope anyone out there who has enjoyed his music would want to support this cause.

Polaris - Hey Sandy

If you have no idea why you are receiving this and would like to be removed, please send a reply email to highlyrecd@gmail.com with the phrase: "OH HELL NO!" in the subject line, or if you would like to add a friend to the list, have them send an email with "SUBSCRIBE!!!" in the subject line, the three exclamation points are key. where is my site

a funny thing happened a few months ago when i finally gave in and transitioned DJdc from a web site to a blog/site hybrid. i stopped writing original content!

so here are a few things off the top of my head that proves to myself, if no one else, that i have thoughts outside of copy and paste.

1. faron young - i think about faron young, a country music star in the '50s and '60s a lot. i think about how his life ended, i think about it a lot. good luck trying to the full story online. it was suicide, but that doesn't tell the whole story

2. game worn jerseys - i wish they weren't so expensive, i'd like to own a few.

3. braves - they aren't doing so hot.

4. i only listened to music for about two hours to day; a lot less than i had hoped, but a lot more than i have in a long time.

5. maybe i should give in and put ads on here. even a little cash would be nice.

6. watching thunderstorms in the distance isn't as fun as being in the thunderstorm.

New Dolly Parton Box Set Coming

Press Release:
After much anticipation, Sony Legacy is releasing Dolly, a deluxe 4-CD box set that spans Dolly’s entire career and features numerous rare never-before-heard tracks and demos, all 21 of Dolly’s #1 country hits, 11 famous Porter/Dolly duets, and many other select tracks. This ultimate box set features 99 songs spanning multiple labels, including Dolly’s early first recordings at the Louisiana-based Goldband label at age 11, rare recordings from Mercury when she was 16, the Monument recordings from 1965-67, her successful RCA recordings from 1967 to 1985, all the way up to her Columbia releases from 1985 until the mid-90’s.

Among the rare treats for Dolly fans on this unique box set include these previously unreleased tracks:

* “Gonna Hurry (As Slow As I Can)” – a demo circa 1957-62, co-written with Dolly’s uncle Bill Owens.
* “Nobody But You” – (with the Merry Melody Singers) – from the same 1962 Nashville sessions that produced Dolly’s Mercury single “It’s Sure Gonna Hurt” b/w “The Love You Gave,” both of which are also included on this box set.
* “I’ve Known You All My Life” – a virtually unknown Goffin-King song (cut by the Four Preps) from the same November 1965 sessions at Monument as “Don’t Drop Out,” produced and arranged by Ray Stevens.
* “Everything Is Beautiful (In Its Own Way)” – an original composition, from the fall 1969 sessions at RCA Studios Nashville for Dolly’s The Fairest Of Them All album.
* An earlier version of “God’s Coloring Book” recorded in April 1971.
* “Eugene Oregon” and “What Will Baby Be” – both original compositions, from the RCA Studios Nashville sessions of December 1972, recorded for Dolly’s My Tennessee Mountain Home album which didn’t make the album.
* “Comin’ For To Carry Me Home” – Dolly’s own arrangement of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and also a 1971 single which reached #23 on the country charts but was never released on any album.

The box set will also feature a 60 page full-color booklet that features rare never-before-seen photographs and memorabilia, an introduction by singer-songwriter Laura Cantrell, and an extensive 5,000 word biographical essay from ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award-winning writer-editor-producer-lecturer Holly George-Warren.

Sure to be a fan favorite, this box set is due out October 27th. Dollyon-line.com and Legacy Recordings will soon be offering fans an exciting opportunity to order the album and receive an exclusive bonus album download with purchase. More details coming soon!

The Stone Roses 20th Anniversary Re-Issue

Rather than write something, here's the whole shebang. I can not believe this album has been out 20 years.

You can pre-order at: www.thestoneroses20.com

Direct from the Press Release:
On September 8, 2009, twenty years from the moment when four Manchester musicians stepped onto the stage of the Blackpool Empress Ballroom for what would become a legendary gig, Silvertone/Legacy is set to re-release the classic album that is THE STONE ROSES in 4 new formats. Over two decades, the impact of the band’s debut album has increased exponentially, inspiring musicians to form bands, marking a re-engagement of guitar music with the mainstream, and creating a youth culture that retains its influence across music, fashion, politics and art to this day.

THE STONE ROSES: COLLECTOR’S EDITION of this landmark album features a fully remastered version of the UK album by original producer John Leckie and Ian Brown, alongside a host of bonus discs, unseen footage, additional tracks and interviews with high profile Roses fans. The full DVD of that legendary Blackpool Empress Ballroom show is included while Disc 2 delivers a complete set of remastered B-sides and non-album A-sides for the band’s Silvertone singles, including such favorites as ‘Mersey Paradise’, ‘Elephant Stone’, ‘Fools Gold’, ‘What The World Is Waiting For’ and ‘One Love’. A third CD features ‘The Lost Demos’, a previously unheard and much sought after selection of early recordings of the album tracks, B-side single tracks, plus the never before heard track ‘Pearl Bastard’. Three heavyweight vinyl LPs also collate the material across 6 sides. Further unheard and unseen material comes in the form of five backwards tracks and John Leckie’s personal home movie ‘Up at Sawmills: The Making of Fools Gold’, which are contained on a Lemon shaped USB - in homage to the album’s iconic sleeve art. The DVD in this collection features the legendary Blackpool gig plus all 6 of the promotional videos made during this period.

A 48-page book within the Collector’s Edition features a host of unseen images and brand new interviews with the band, plus a poem and sketch by Reni exclusively for the collection, as well as interviews with super producer John Leckie and high profile fans Noel Gallagher, Peter Hook, Mark Ronson, Glasvegas and many others. This remarkable Collector’s Edition also includes 6 John Squire 12” card art prints for the tracks ‘I Wanna Be Adored’, ‘She Bangs The Drums’, ‘Elephant Stone’, ‘Fools Gold’, ‘One Love’ and ‘I Am The Resurrection’.

Stingray Sam Trailer (Coming September 15)

From the press release:

"In Stingray Sam, Cory McAbee's second sci-fi musical featuring music by McAbee's band The Billy Nayer Show, David Hyde Pierce narrates the story that begins with a dangerous mission that reunites Stingray Sam with his long lost accomplice, The Quasar Kid. The story follows these two space convicts as they earn their freedom in exchange for the rescue of a young girl who is being held captive by the genetically designed figurehead of a very wealthy planet.

Written and directed by McAbee and produced by Bobby Lurie and Becky Glupczynski, Stingray Sam is a feature length film divided into six episodes that combines live action, graphic collages and illustrations, photo montages and animation to tell a story of the future, based on themes of modern times. Created for the new advancements in technology, with an old-fashioned sensibility borrowing on the traditions of sci-fi, westerns, signing cowboy serials and musicals of classic American film, Stingray Sam is impressing audiences around the globe. Stingray Sam premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Third Eye Blind - Everyone Has A Story (or two)

During the last 15 years the most relevant, irrelevant - er - irrelevant, relevant band may just be Third Eye Blind. The band, but specifically Stephan Jenkins, has done two things:

1) Put out several extremely catchy songs
2) Become the band you love to hate

Former Blender editor Rob Tannenbaum defends Third Eye Blind in this article in the NY Post with you must read.

Here's the thing, I've been going back and forth on the band for years. I almost cleared an indie-pop dance floor four years ago playing, "Semi-Charmed Life". Those who I didn't run off, loved it. Everyone else didn't get it. It was too early to be retro for the wannabe hipsters.

Jenkins is what he is. Talented, but nerve-grinding. I've got a number of first hand stories from his tours in '97/'98 (including a wonderful story of getting dissed by a local while on tour and while dating his soon-to-be superstar actress girlfriend {crying in a car, come on dude}). But you can't discount that - despite all the qualities that make the band the anti-Oasis - they made some of the best modern-rock pop songs of the late-'90s.

He was too popular (and not business minded enough) to be Butch Walker; he was too much of a poser to be as respectfully-hated as the Gallagher bothers; he was to relevant to fall into the category with bands like Cool for August, Eve 6 or Dishwalla; yet the band wasn't "indie" enough to get embraced like Nada Surf or Fountains of Wayne.

No, Third Eye Blind - and Jenkins - have both failed and succeeded in hanging around because he wanted it too much.
