Bob Barker is retiring

Yep, it's true. Bob Barker will be retiring in June from the Price Is Right. Only 50 years in TV. It will be a sad day.

So yeah, about that facelift

There is a new look coming - after thinking it was complete - it wasn't. Maybe later tonight, maybe next week. But a new look, sleeker version of DeadJournalist.com is comeing.

If you missed it, it's been five years since the iPod launched. Ah, the Walkman of this generation.

Last week there was a story about how decaf coffee actually had caffine. It's something I just can't wrap my head around - why would you drink coffee with no caffine? That's like beer with no alcohol. Maybe I'm just not as evolved as the next guy, but I don't drink either just because I like the taste.

Wait, Weird Al is in the top 10? With all due respect ... what???

So Snoop had a gun at the airport? Shocking.

Why do so many people watch Flavor of Love? And does this somehow tie in with Weird Al in the top 10?

So anyway, here's something to prove that the world has always been a little crazy. Today's video is from the killer - Jerry Lee Lewis, "Whole Lotta Shakin'"

If you haven't seen the CNN video about insurgent snipers in Iraq, you really should check it out. It's currently on the main page at CNN.com.

Last night's Project Runway was solid, if not predictable.

Freddy Fender passes

Freddy Fender, a latin-american country singer from the 1970's passed away after a long batter with cancer. He was 69. Also, the first openly gay congressman, Gerry Studds, died as well.

Top of the Pops - the UK's long-time music show is back, sort of. Top of the Pops 2 has replaced Top of the Pops on the BBC. We're interested to hear from our UK readers if the new version worth anything.

When everything is said and done ...

it's been a while since i have digressed into personal rants, but after several days of grinding a few critical thoughts between the rigors of my current day-to-day life, i'm indulging.

i caught lou dobbs on the daily show a couple of nights ago. i'm a noted fan on dobbs, who often cuts right to the quick. during his spot he meantioned how he feels that american has drifted - rapidly - from a society built on hard work to one built on speculation and investments. i don't disagree. it's frustrating to bust your ass working and find yourself being passed by trust-fund kids, investment prospecters and go-luckies. frustrations of the common man i suppose.

sitting on my desk are several dozen cd's, most of which i bought, although a few are from various pr firms or record labels. a few feet aware are a stack of books that were gifts of impulse buys. these days having the time to read or listen to a music seems akin to hitting the lottery.

a couple of notes about this site. i'm running far behind on getting interviews out. i have six artists all of whom should have been interviewed by the end of last week. throw in a freelance assignment and the up-in-the-air status of a partnership with another site, and i'm piling more dirt on my own grave. i haven't had the time - and what time i have - i want to use try - try - and relax. easier said that done.

it's been a tough week, and frankly, i'm down. with so much going on at work this week - and it no where near over yet - and a personal milestone that occurred this week, it has gotten to me. i'm tired. being so open with my personal state of being isn't easy.

but then again, i really shouldn't be complaining. things could be a hell of a lot worse.

Buck O'Neil Passes; New Video

Buck O'Neil, whom we have written about several times, passed away yesterday at 94. He lived a good life.

Seriously, there's nothing interesting going on in the world of music news. Nothing. When Trace Adkins gets reviews on "critics darling" Web sites and other sites are more interested in a bitch-fight between two horrible, commercial emo bands, I say there is no news.

I wanted to see a video by the Cure. I chose "Mint Car". Enjoy.

Decemberists Interview: Sneak Peak!

Exclusive Interview: The Decemberists
Chuck Norton, DeadJournalist.com

THIS IS A SNEAK PEAK ONLY FOR BLOG READERS! The complete, in-depth interview coming soon!

DeadJournalist.com brings you this exclusive interview with Chris Funk of the Decemberists.

Has the band’s increasing popularity, combined with the ability to play larger venues, changed your live performances?

CF: Yes, of course. We are conscious of the fact that thanks to Ticketmaster people are spending a bunch of cash to see us play, we don't want to let them down. However, we never really talked about changing parts of a show, everything has come with the tedium of playing the same song over and over. (laughs)

Has the Decemberists’ commercial success been a surprise to the band?

CF: We don't really feel commercially successful, to us that means like Jay Z or Fergie or some huge act. We make a living doing this, but you know, we just live the same. We are flattered that people want to share this with us, however we're surprised everyday by it in some way.

What makes being in the Decemberists unlike being in any other band?

CF: So many instruments on stage and so little cocaine backstage.

As a musician, who are the artists that influenced you the most?

CF: Like I hinted at before, so many from all over the map - it changes every week. Some weirdo's with beards on the covers of British folk records to more burnouts on psy-rock LP's to trange-gypsy mama's on the covers of bad, jug band records.

To read the complete interview (going up in the next few days), check DeadJournalist.com!

Give 'Em the Keys to Rock 'n Roll: the Hold Steady

What happens when you throw Cheap Trick, Mike Ness, Mark Cohn, Lucero, Sugar, the Replacements, Bruce Springsteen and the Smithereens in a zip-lock bag and shake it around for a while?

Something that comes close to the idea that is the Hold Steady.

The new album Boys and Girls in America is every bit as good as the hype. With songs that tell stories about girls, drinking and just living life; and a sound that mixes blazing guitars with horns, pianos and Craig Finn's vocals; this album fits one classification: fucking amazing rock n' roll.

More Interviews in: the Decemberists, Cory Branan

Yup, that's right! More interviews in this morning: the Decemberists and Cory Branan.

Check back on the blog as one or two of these might sneak on the blog before they go on the site.

If you don't read Performer Magazine (www.performermag.com) you should check it out. Not only are the regional issues free and full of news, information and features on musical artists, but I happen to have the cover story (13ghosts) for the SE edition this month. So if you want to see what happens when I have an editor - check out the article (or the CD spotlight on Bouldercrest Singing Group).

Site News and Upcoming Interviews: 120 Days, KissKill Destroyer

Rarely does DeadJournalist announce upcoming interviews, but this time we're going to. Interviews going up in the next few days will be an interview with Baltimore's electro/darkwave band KissKill Destroyer and Norway's 120 Days (recently signed to Vice Recordings).

There have been a couple of slight changes to the home page, and here's why. We've removed the update dates because now that the blog is updated remotely, often a blog is added but the main page doesn't show the change.

Finally, if you are in the Atlanta area and looking for something to do early on Friday night, check out Funk Night at Ella Guru CD's (http://www.myspace.com/ellagurucds).

My Bad; End of VideoMiX?

If you've checked out the Close's article, you'll notice something odd about the story. It seems to duplicate itself. I'm not sure how that happened, but it will be corrected tonight ASAP. Sorry about that the Close! (Thanks to Keefe for pointing that out.)

With this new layout (with which there's also something odd happening) I'm not sure if the VideoMiX should stay or go. So if you love it or hate it, speak now.

Unleash the Hounds!

First, Slim Moon leaves Kill Rock Stars for Nonsense. Then, CMJ releases it's line-up for CMJ New York. Wow, at the artists this year.

And, you'll notice several DeadJournalist alumnus - from Irving to Cassette's Won't Listen - among the featured performers.

When talking on the artists playing Atlanta this week, I left off Girl Talk Friday night at Azul.

Finally, if you are in the Southeast (of if you want to check it out on-line), check out the cover story of Performer Magazine SE (www.performermag.com). You might recognize the author.

Punch Tipsy Like

There's now real news that you didn't read here over the weekend. Atlanta people, this week has two potentially fantastic shows - Ratatat tonight and the Hold Steady Wednesday night. I may try to sneak by that Wednesday show as Sean Na Na (with Nyles Lannon) will also be playing.

Stay turned for interviews this week. Good stuff in, good stuff on the way.

Off to get an interview up.

It's Football Night in America

Hands-down, NBC's Football Night in America is the best sports program not on pay-cable.

I was going to watch the new Saturday Night Live just long enough to see the opener, the news and the Killers first set. Oops, I sorta fell asleep on the couch and missed it. From what I've been reading, I didn't miss too much. Did anyone else watch it? Thoughts?

The Braves ended their season with a win. Let the Spring Training countdown begin now.

If you forgot about (or are too young to remember) the fantastic British band Teenage Fanclub, let me remind you just how good they were in their prime. In 1991, the band's album Bandwagonesque was rated #2 album of the year by almost every music publication in the US and UK (Nirvana's Nevermind was #1). When picking a song from the album, most people will choose "Star Sign", but for today's video I'm going with "What You Do To Me". Enjoy.
